The Department of Folkloristics is in charge of the Institute’s Folklore Collection, which contains recorded material collected from oral tradition. Starfræktur er gagnagrunnur, á vegum Ísmús, þar sem finna má flokkaða yfirlitsskrá um þjóðfræðiefni ásamt hljóðritum (að hluta).
Research and Projects
Research is being carried out on the collection’s material and related topics. Publication is an important part of the work of the Department of Folkloristics.
Conservation and Sorting
Emphasis is placed on the preservation, maintenance, sorting, and cataloguing of the collection, in order to make it more readily accessible. Work is being done on an electronic database accessible through the Internet, with part of the collection already open to the public in this form.
The Árnastofnun’s sound studio has facilities for listening to material from the Folklore Collection. It is also possible to have copies made of material in the collection for use in scholarly and artistic projects or other types of publications.
